Abstract

RAMOS, Valmor; NASCIMENTO, Juarez Vieira do  and  GRACA, Amândio. Analysis of the coaching instruction in the youth sport training: a case study in basketball. Rev. Port. Cien. Desp. [online]. 2009, vol.9, n.1, pp.52-63. ISSN 1645-0523.

The purpose of this study was to describe the way a Brazilian youth basketball coach builds on his coaching program by inspecting the purposes he set for the coaching, the curricular model and the instructional strategies he adopted, and the knowledge he held about the learning characteristics of his players. The coach, who was purposefully selected for this case study, is a male with ten years of coaching experience and highly recognized for his competence in preparing young basketball players. Data were collected from systematic observation of video and audio records of the coaching sessions during a two weeks micro-cycle; and from formal and informal interviews, also including procedures of stimulated recall. Trustworthiness of descriptions and interpretations was sought by means of triangulation of data sources, participant checking, and researchers’ use of audit trail. Results indicated that the coach’s instruction prized the players’ understanding the tactical model of the game and the functional principles of play. In order to achieve these goals, the coach proceeded to simplify the game structure and used predominantly game-like tasks and questioning feedback. The high frequency of individualized interactions, the stress on thoughtfully engagement, and the focus on principles of play corroborate the idea of a coaching model oriented towards game understanding.
