MAZO, Giovana Z et al. Physical activity and quality of life of Brazilian elderly women from Florianópolis city, Brazil. Rev. Port. Cien. Desp. [online]. 2008, vol.8, n.3, pp.414-423. ISSN 1645-0523.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the levels of physical activity (PA) and its relationship with the quality of life (QOL) of elderly women. Sample was composed by 198 elderly women (73.6±5.9 years) participants of coexistence groups for old aged in the city of Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The data collection instruments were the follow: Form with identification data; International Questionnarie of Physical Activity (IQPA); and the Quality of Life Questionnaire of the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-bref). Initially, sample was classified according to the PA levels in: less active (<150 min. per week) and most active (≥150 min. per week). Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney Test and the analysis of binary logistic regression, adopting a level of significance of 5%. The results indicated that the most active elderly were the ones that presented higher averages in the psychological and physical domains of QOL, showing better QOL in these domains. Also the aged women that showed a worse outcome in the physical domain of QOL have a risk three times greater to be less physically active. Thus, these results suggest that AF plays an important role in the quality of life of the elderly women.
