BASTOS, Maria João; GRACA, Amândio  e  SANTOS, Paulo. Complexity analysis of formal versus modified games in young scholars. Rev. Port. Cien. Desp. [online]. 2008, vol.8, n.3, pp.355-364. ISSN 1645-0523.

The purpose of this research was the characterization of exercise intensity and the analysis of the complexity of formal versus modified game forms in young secondary school basketball players. With this aim in mind we defined three specific goals: (1) to evaluate exercise intensity in three different game forms, using heart rate and blood lactate) as physiological indicators; (2) to evaluate the total distance covered in each of the three game forms and also the displacement intensities used by players; (3) to quantify the type of motor tasks in the different game forms. The results indicate similar blood lactate average values in 3-on-3 half court form and 5-on-5 full court form (1,55±0,81 mmol/l and 1,60±0,76 mmol/l, respectively), although clearly higher in the 3-on-3 full court form (2,60±1,50 mmol/l). No statistical differences were observed in heart rate average values between the three groups, although values were higher in the 3-on-3 full court (175,86±15,68 bat.min-1), by comparison to the 3-on-3 half court (168,33±13,84 bat.min-1) and 5-on-5 full court (168,75±14,01 bat.min-1) forms. The total distance covered was clearly higher in the 3-on-3 full court form (3791±532 m) comparatively to the 5-on-5 full court (2915±390 m) and the 3-on-3 half court (2174±363 m). The higher amount of motor tasks was observed in 3-on-3 full court (113,61±37,32), followed by  3-on-3 half court (102,28±36,62) and 5-on-5 full court (65,28±27,48) forms, respectively.
