CARDOSO, Cheila  e  COSTA, Rui. Sexual functioning and tobacco consumption in a young sample. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.2, pp.262-276. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210203.

Smoking is a dose-dependent risk factor for erectile dysfunction in samples that include or are entirely made up of men over the age of 40. In young men, the results are contradictory. Tobacco consumption and female sexual difficulties have been found to be unrelated in studies in samples that include or are entirely made up of women over 40 years old. There is lack of studies in younger women. Personality and consumption of other psychoactive substances may explain part of the association between tobacco consumption and sexual difficulties, but this has been overlooked. The present study aimed at examining the association between tobacco consumption and sexual functioning in a young sample of both sexes, and to explore the role of personality and consumption of others substances played here. The study was conducted through an online questionnaire and was attended by 180 women and 53 men heterosexual Portuguese between 18 and 39 years. Female sexual functioning was assessed by the Female Sexual Function Index and the Female Sexual Distress Scale - Revised. Male sexual functioning was measured by the International Index of Erectile Function and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool. Smoking was not associated with sexual difficulties in women. In men, it was associated with lower erectile function, but not after controlling for neuroticism, conscientiousness, and alcohol and cannabis consumption. The results show that nicotine does not appear to pose significant risks to female sexual functioning. In young men, more research is needed that takes into account personality and substance consumption.
