Resumen

QUEIROS, Cristina; OLIVEIRA, Simão; SA, Catarina  y  MARQUES, António José. Hipertermia e intervenção nos estados emocionais: revisão da literaturaHypertermia and intervention in emotional states: literature review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.1, pp.213-220. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210131.

In the field of medicine/psychiatry, some diseases (e.g., syphilis, delusions, manic states with motor agitation) were treated with hyperthermia through fever-inducing agents or immersion baths. Currently, sophisticated equipment as infrared full body hyperthermia have been used in pain, pathologies such as fibromyalgia and in oncology (tumors), and results show a parallel improvement in depressive symptoms. This study aims to present a literature review about the use of hyperthermia in depression and emotional states. Method: Ebsco/Medline/Pubmed databases were explored in September/October 2019 and studies in English were analyzed according to sample, intervention and main results. Results: We found 12 eligible studies, published between 2011 and 2019 (although one in 1992), being one with animals, one of historical description of treatment, one of theoretical review in the application to depression and three comments. Thus, six studies analyzed patients with depressive symptoms and found improvements in emotional state after intervention, namely with increased body temperature of one degree. Discussion: Results suggest that hyperthermia seems to be a promising intervention in improving emotional states and psychological health, especially for depressive symptoms. Moreover, hyperthermia can be combined with pharmacological or other interventions.
