Pregnancy and childbirth literacy aims to promote knowledge, skills and resources that determine the ability to acquire, interpret, communicate and manage decision-making issues for the maintenance of women's and baby's health, demystifying beliefs associated with this life cycle. Thus, we sought to identify literacy levels about pregnancy and childbirth in the adult population, focusing on the main concerns and consequent resources used to obtain information. For this, we used the systematic review search method, performed in the B-on database, using the combinations of descriptors “health literacy” and “childbirth or pregnancy”. A total of 133 articles were obtained which, after applying the eligibility criteria and removing duplicates, became 16. It appears that the adult population has low levels of literacy, mainly concerned with taking medication during pregnancy and lactation, gestational diabetes and fear of pain. Exchanges of experiences between acquaintances are prioritized, rather than seeking information from health professionals, which contributes to the rooting of erroneous beliefs. These results underscore the relevance of exhaustively characterizing pregnancy and childbirth-related health literacy as a starting point for program planning for its necessary promotion.
