Resumen

ASSUNCAO, Hugo  y  MAROCO, João. Use of medication in university students with Burnout. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2020, vol.21, n.1, pp.15-21. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210104.

Studying for exams, delivering assignments and meeting deadlines creates high cognitive demands on higher education students. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between academic engagement, burnout and social support in the use of medication among higher education students in Portugal. For this purpose we gathered data from 1,067 higher education students (65% women; average age = 23 years). Data was collected online via social networks. We found that one in three college students took medication because of their studies. The main purpose of the medication was to treat anxiety symptoms (one in six), cognitive performance problems (one in seven), sleep problems (one in fourteen) and symptoms of depression (one in twenty-two). Burnout, academic engagement and social support were significant predictors of the use of medication among university students. The results of this study are useful in the implementation of preventive actions and intervention programs for Portuguese university students.

Palabras clave : University Students; Medication; Burnout; Engagement; Social Support.
