Abstract

LEONARDO, Joana  and  PEREIRA, Henrique. The relationship between attachment styles and sexual functioning. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.3, pp.604-617. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/19psd200305.

The attachment follow the human being throughout his life, from infancy to his adult life. The relationship between attachment styles and sexual functioning appears pertinently as an area of interest although it remains unclear. Thus, the present study sought to understand and evaluate the degree of association between attachment styles and sexual functioning as well as to determine the predictive effect of binding styles on sexual functioning in a normative sample (n = 1170). The results demonstrate the degree of association between different types of attachment and sexual functioning. In the interpretation of the data, it was also considered the influence of gender between men and women, with differences of gender in both variables. The results of this study appear as a comprehensive framework on the influence of the binding process on sexual functioning, thus offering answers to a broader understanding in this area. This study allows to contribute to a better understanding of the study variables, noting the importance of further studies to explore this theme.

Keywords : attachment styles; sexual functioning; attachment; gender diferences.
