Resumen

POMBO, Samuel; MARINHO, Ângelo  y  SAMPAIO, Daniel. Psychometric properties of the hangover symptoms scale (HSS). Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.3, pp.581-589. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/19psd200303.

The adverse event most frequently associated with an acute situation of excessive alcohol consumption is the so-called “the next day hangover”. The present study aims to validate a psychometric instrument - the Hangover Symptoms Scale (HSS), to evaluate the hangover experience associated with alcohol consumption. For this purpose, 433 students from various secondary schools in the district of Lisbon were included. The most reported hangover symptoms were: "I felt more tired than usual", "I felt headache" and "I felt dehydrated". The reliability, evaluated through the internal consistency of the items, determined a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.86. Principal component analysis of the 13 HSS items confirmed two major components with eigenvalues greater than 1.0 (eigenvalues 4.9 and 1.6) representing 38.3% and 12.9% of the total symptom variance. The factorial solution explains 59.5% of the total variance. Convergent validity was ensured by a significantly positive correlation between the total HSS score and the total the Adolescent Alcohol Involvement Scale. The preliminary results of the psychometric analysis of HSS allow the use of this instrument in several contexts of investigation to assess the alcohol consumption habits of the population.
