Abstract

SILVA, Sabrina; MELO, Cynthia de Freitas  and  MAGALHAES, Bárbara. A relapse in pediatric oncology from the perspective of professionals. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.2, pp.542-555. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/19psd200221.

Cancer is a socially feared disease, recognizing treatment as a long and painful process for the patient, his family members and professionals. When it comes to childhood cancer and its relapse, the subject becomes even more delicate. An issue that is not very much addressed, but which calls for research that gives voice to these subjects. Responding to this demand, the present research aimed to understand the work experience in the relapse of pediatric cancer from the professionals' perspective. An exploratory and qualitative approach was carried out. It was attended by ten health professionals who work in pediatric oncology, who answered a semi-structured interview script, whose data were understood through lexical analysis in Iramuteq software. The results show that: the choice of pediatric oncology as the area of ??action occurs during the residence; work is marked by plural feelings of impotence and gratitude; the greatest challenges for professionals are dealing with the suffering and demands of parents and the child's death process; communication about cancer recurrence is difficult for professionals and parents; the absence of cure prognosis opens space for another form of approach - palliative care; and the child understands the process of treatment and death. It is concluded that oncological pediatrics is a painful and pleasurable area of ??action, which lacks care devices with the mental health of its professionals, so that they can be well and care for their patients with quality.
