Characteristics of police work, as well as its process of institutionalization and social representation, are aspects that are relevant to the investigation of the mental health of police officers. Producing evidence and interpreting them in light of consolidated or emerging theoretical references is a challenge in the specialized literature. The objective of this study was to systematize the theoretical-methodological trends in the studies on the mental health of Brazilian police officers. A literature review was carried out on the following databases; Scielo, PePsic, BVS-Psi, Lilacs and PsycINFO (January 2001 to December 2017). Original studies, carried out in Brazil, with a primary outcome of mental health of civil, military, federal police and municipal guards were included in Portuguese and English. The final analysis consisted of 47 articles. The theoretical-methodological emphases are concentrated in epidemiological, psychodynamic, and theory of stress based studies. Most of the studies relate the officer's mental health to their daily psychological load, faced in violence control and containment routines, with repercussions on the quality of the professional bonds, the perception of risk, health and the family. Associated with these aspects are the problems arising from working conditions, which tend to maximize difficulties on the exercise of police activity, the precariousness of equipment, restrictions on training, and low wages. The mental health of the Brazilian police officer is rarely emphasized as a means of prevention, which makes it relevant and necessary to base policies and programs in this direction.
