This research investigated family perceptions about cohesion and hierarchy amongst HIV/AIDS patients under ambulatory care in Maputo - Mozambique. Sixteen participants, both male and female were involved in the study, which was conducted using the genogram technique and the Family System Test, a spatial application technique. The results indicated high and growing scores of family cohesion in both typical and ideal representations. Nevertheless, hierarchy showed a decreased growth from typical to ideal, especially on mother and siblings dyads, and the HIV/AIDS illness seems to have less influence in the perception of cohesion and hierarchy among the family members. The research contributed to highlight the need for more attention to the family constellations in the care of patients with HIV / AIDS, in order to find strategies that strengthen family support that is characteristic of Mozambican families guided by collectivist values ??and behaviors. However, more congeners studies and larger samples need to be performed to better understand the associations identified in the present study.
