The aim of this study is to identify the occurrence of anxiety and depression among elderly patientes eho were terated in the public and private healthcare systems and the relationship between these affective disorders and social inequality. It was conducted a cross-sectional study of 171 elderly people, of whom 85 were treated in private hospitals (G1) and 86 were treated in public hospitals (G2). As a research instrument, it was carried out a semi-structured questionnaire, the short version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI). It was obsersved a social and economic inequality between the groups g1 and G2. The G2 group shows a GDS 42% and a GAI 41% prevalence. The protective factors and the relationships with depression showed the following results in the test x². High level education (?² = 0,000) and high income (?² = 0,002). On the other hand, the Anxiety Tests had following statistically significants results: high level education (?² = 0,000), high income (?² = 0,011) and living with a family member or spouse (?² = 0,011). The results showed that the social inequality between the groups has an implication in the affective disorders.
