The aim of this study was to investigate coping strategies in elderly with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and if there are any differences in the use of strategies, alone or grouped into categories, according to sociodemographic characteristics, the degree of severity of osteoarthritis, pain and other KOA symptoms. The sample consisted of 73 individuals with 69± 5.9 years old and with clinical and radiological diagnosis of KOA. The instruments were Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and the Brief COPE questionnaires. The statistical analisys was based on multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). No significant statistical differences were founded, indicating that the coping strategies, alone or grouped, were not influenced by variables tested. Thus, we conclude that face to the adversities of OAJ regardless of gender, academic level, the KOA severity and the self- reported pain level. The findings may contribute to educational programs wich aims to develop coping strategies in older adults with KOA.
