Resumen

ANVERSA, Ana Luiza Barbosa et al. Quality of life and body image of women practicing strength training and gymnastics. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2019, vol.20, n.1, pp.149-159. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/19psd200112.

The present study had the goal to compare the quality of life (QL) and body image of females whom practice resistance training or fitness classes at gyms. This transversal research was performed with 120 women (33±8,7 years old), being 40 resistance training practitioners (G1), 40 fitness classes practitioners (G2), and 40 who practice both (G3). A sociodemographic questionnaire was used for data collection, along with the WHOQOL-Bref and the Body Shape Questionnaire. The following tests were performed for data analysis: Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney's “U”, Spearman Correlation Coefficient and Chi-Square, with significance level for p<0.05. Results have shown a difference between groups only for QL perception in the Social Relationship domain (p=0.018) and Body Image (p=0.029). Women from G3 had higher distortion of body image (Md=85.0) when compared to other groups (Md=84.0 and Md=74.0, for G1 and G2 respectively). A significant association was found only for Ethnicity (p=0.026). It was concluded that body image satisfaction was not a decisive factor for the quality of life of these women.

Palabras clave : motor activity; resistance training; self image.
