Obesity is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon. In the search for effective ways to care for and prepare the obese for Bariatric Surgery, it is crucial to understanding how they perceive their quality of life. Faced with scarce literature in the national context on the theme, this article aims to analyze how obese aspirants to Bariatric Surgery assess their quality of life. Thus, we sought to: 1) identify how participants qualify the psychological, social, environmental and physical domains of their lives; 2) to reflect on the adequacy of the World Health Organization Quality of Life scale (WHOQOL-bref) in the context of the hospital evaluation of candidates for Bariatric Surgery. This was an empirical, exploratory, descriptive, cross-sectional study whose collection was carried out in October and November 2016, with 29 adult patients attended by the IMIP's Psychological Evaluation Laboratory, obeying the ethical recommendations of the research ethics committee involving human beings. The instruments used were the WHOQOL-bref scale and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results emphasized the multidimensional relationship between obesity and quality of life, with predominance of dysfunctional aspects of physical order and difficulties faced by participants in interpersonal relationships. In the data, professional and family supports appeared as important factors for coping with obesity, thus contributing to better emotional management during the preparatory period for bariatric surgery. The WHOQOL-bref scale allowed us to understand relevant aspects of the quality of life of the candidates for bariatric surgery in care at IMIP. It is suggested research with robust samples for statistical deepening of the data found here.
