MENEZES, Mariana Siqueira  y  FARO, André. Depressive symptomatology and emotional regulation in patients with crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2018, vol.19, n.3, pp.743-754. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/18psd190321.

This study investigated the depressive symptomatology and aspects related to emotional regulation in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), specifically Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Participants were 63 subjects who answered a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire, the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression - Revised scale. We found that the positive diagnosis for depressive symptomatology was 52.4%. Factors associated to the diagnosis were: age between 36 and 49 years old, high-school or graduate level, having ulcerative colitis, diseases’ history of more than five years, having had an inflammatory crisis in the last year, having underwent surgical procedures for treatment, and suffer from other chronic diseases. On the emotional regulation, lower scores in the Cognitive Reassessment subscale and higher scores in Emotional Suppression were related to increased chances for depression. With the findings of this research, we found an occurrence of depressive symptoms in patients with IBD in a proportion above a half of the sample, as well as we detected there were significant relationships between sociodemographic profile, clinical profile and emotional regulation and depression. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the main peculiarity of this study was the evaluation of the relationship between depression and emotional regulation, which means a positive contribution to Health Psychology in interface with Proctology.
