Abstract

COSTA, Poliana Freitas  and  CERQUEIRA-SANTOS, Elder. Factors associated with condom use and prostitution among truck drivers in Brazil. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2018, vol.19, n.3, pp.617-627. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/18psd1912.

This work aims to investigate the relationship between condom use and sexual relations with prostitutes among Brazilian truck drivers and their associated variables. Sample is composed of 680 men truck drivers, between 19 and 73 years (M = 42.52 SD = 10.78). Instrument addressed the use of condoms, alcohol consumption, sexual practices on the road and a scale of conservatism. Data collection was performed through Ecological Insertion, for convenience, in resting areas or loading and unloading queues. Results indicated that the highest percentage of condom use was found among single people (42.1%), as well as among Catholics (35%). Only 24.9% of the sample makes consistent condom use. Alcohol use and conservatism did not show a significant correlation with each other; however, alcohol had a positive correlation with the number of partners per year, condom use and frequency of sexual relations on the road. Marital status, sex on the road and number of partners per year also showed a strong predictive value for consistent condoms use in a binary regression. This study confirmed the relationship of condom use with some associated factors such as alcohol, number of partners per year, marital status and frequency of sexual intercourse per week, as previously reported in revised studies.

Keywords : truck driver; epidemiology; condom; prostitution.
