This study aimed to understand the emotional and relational aspects involved in mothers facing the illness and first hospitalization of a child. One collective case study was conducted. The sample consisted of four mothers of children who were in their first hospitalization. The instruments used were a form with sociodemographic data, Inventory to assess depression, anxiety and perception of family support and a semi-structured interview. Data analysis was performed from the qualitative content analysis of the interview, which were triangulated with the results of quantitative inventories. The results showed that mothers deal differently with the hospitalization of their children, although always be considered a situation with suffering involved and changes in family dynamics
