LUFIEGO, Claudia Adriana Facco; SCHNEIDER, Rodolfo Herberto  e  BOS, Ângelo José Gonçalves. Evaluation of stress and anxiety in patients undergoing chemotherapy to relaxation. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.3, pp.789-800. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/17psd180313.

Patients undergoing chemotherapy have high levels of anxiety and stress. Relaxation techniques can help to minimize these effects. This study is a clinical trial, quasi-experimental and quantitative tracking, evaluating the efficacy of relaxation techniques for images induction in chemotherapy patients in reducing anxiety levels with the use of the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and stress through Distress Thermometer (TD). The sample consisted of 113 participants, 57 in the experimental group (EG) and 56 in the control group (CG), both undergoing chemotherapy at a university hospital in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Data were analyzed using the t-Student test before and after the follow-up. There was no difference in the levels of anxiety and stress in the initial evaluation. After 14 weeks of intervention, there was a reduction in anxiety levels in EG (-2.19 ± 4.12, p = 0.0003) and stress (-0.68 + 1.52, p = 0.0043). The CG showed no significant increase in the levels of anxiety and stress. The results suggest that interventions through relaxation sessions in patients undergoing chemotherapy offer positive effects in reducing anxiety and stress.
