Abstract

WECHSLER, Amanda Muglia; SARTORELLI, Juliana Lopes; PEREIRA, Bruna Flávia Gomes  and  PARO, Bárbara Loss. Contributive factors for the resilience of adolescents with cancer: a pilot study. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.3, pp.724-738. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/17psd180308.

Cancer in adolescence demands some adaptive strategies to deal with several routine changes. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence of resilience in adolescents with cancer and the factors that contribute to this behavior. We evaluated 30 teenagers with cancer and 30 adolescents with no history of this disease, with a social-demographic/ medical questionnaire, the Inventory of Coping Strategies, the Social Support Scale and the Scale of Cohesion and Family Adaptation. Our results show that the clinic group presented more adaptive coping strategies and similar resilience as the control group. In addition, we observed some important relations between religiosity, social support and resilience. Our conclusions highlight the importance of a resilience approach in Pediatric Oncology and the design of specific psychological interventions to these patients.

Keywords : resilience; cancer; adolescents; risk factors; protection factors.
