The exposure of children to secondhand smoke is a worldwide reality with serious negative consequences on children's health. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term efficacy of the intervention program Domicílios 100% livres de fumo, in the prevention of children's secondhand tobacco smoke exposure. The study included an experimental group of 466 4th graders students from Braga schools and a control group of 273 4th graders students from Covilhã schools in Portugal. A validated self-reported questionnaire was administered to both groups before and after the program implementation. The program was only administered to the experimental group. Results showed a significant lower prevalence of mothers who smoke in the experimental group than in the control group. However, no significant differences were found on the parents' tobacco consumption at home after the intervention, which confirms the results found in other studies. Future intervention programs should adopt a community approach and focus directly on parents.
