Abstract

SOARES, Iracil; ESSWEIN, Georgius Cardoso  and  BENETTI, Silvia Pereira da Cruz. Motivation for change in men and women crack addicts. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.2, pp.567-580. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/17psd180223.

The objective of this study was to investigate the association of symptoms of anxiety and depression, craving, with motivation to change, in 159 crack-addicted male and female adults hospitalized in public and private institutions Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil. The instruments used were the Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Cocaine Craving Questionnaire for Crack, Scale URICA and The Readiness-to-Change ruler. Participants had moderate symptoms of anxiety and craving, minimal depression; classified as pre-contemplating and maintaining change. The main predictors of change (URICA) were sex (female), place of hospitalization, and history of losses. In conclusion, the treatment for crack dependence needs to be based in a careful evaluation of the emotional characteristics and motivation.

Keywords : sex; crack cocaine; drug abuse; depression; anxiety.
