Resumen

BACHETTI, Lívia da Silva; FUKUSIMA, Sergio Sheiji  y  QUAGLIA, Maria Amélia Cesari. The effect of alcohol in visuospatial perception and spatial cognition. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.2, pp.451-461. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/17psd180213.

The excessive use of alcoholic beverages is a common practice around the world, despite its deleterious effects. The present paper aims to identify some of the major damages caused by the consumption of alcohol on perception and spatial cognition through a literature review of studies conducted on the topic. Among the main damages caused by alcohol, we highlight the difficulties in depth perception of objects; processing visuospatial information; perception of contrasts objects; construction, use and manipulation of information from visual images; explicit memories formation of spatial stimuli; and spatial navigation. To better situate the topic in this field of research, we present first the concepts of spatial cognition and perception of three-dimensional space, as well as major brain pathways in this process. Then, we describe the results of studies linking these losses to the respective brain areas affected by alcohol, especially to the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe and the hippocampus.

Palabras clave : alcohol; perception; cognition.
