Abstract

BUENO, Igor A. F.; TARABAY, Christina H.  and  LOURENCO, Maria Teresa Cruz. Communication in oncology and phychological adjustment: a literature review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.3, pp.527-541. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/16psd170317.

This literature review aims to understand the factors involved in the process of communication between the physician and the patient in the oncological area to improve it in order to contribute to future studies in obtaining better indicators of psychological adjustment and lower levels of psychological stress. To survey the bibliographic material, we used descriptors such as communication, physician, cancer and adjustment or distress from PubMed and PsycINFO databases. After the initial analysis of the abstracts of the studies, it was obtained the material described. Twenty-seven articles was found that indicate aspects about the patient; about the interaction with the physician and evaluation of care; findings on pain research; communication skills and recommendations; and complementary and alternative care practices. It is concluded that therapeutic communication is a continuous and complex process that has implications for adjustment and psychological well-being of cancer patients. This relationship depends on patient's personal factors and also health professional's skills. The communication process should be treated with care and should be invested by the professional to address aspects of the physical and emotional care.

Keywords : communication; cancer; psychological adjustment; psychological distress.
