Abstract

COUTINHO, Maria da Penha de Lima et al. Relation between depression and quality of life of adolescents in school context. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.3, pp.338-351. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/16psd170303.

The study aimed to verify the relation between depression and quality of life (QOL) of adolescents in school context. Specifically, to know the prevalence of depressive symptomatology; to analyze the correlation of depression with quality of life and to compare groups with and without depressive symptomatology. We had the participation of 204 adolescents, between 12 and 18 years old (M = 14,99; SD = 1,92), mostly females (53,4%), from public schools of João Pessoa, Paraíba, which responded to the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the QV questionaire (Kidskreen-52) and a sociodemographic questionaire. Data were submitted to descriptive and inferential statistics. The results concerning the prevalence of depressive symptomatology shows the presence of 8,3 from the total sample. About the correlation between the domains of QOL and depressive prevalence, we noticed negative ones, the strongest being in emotional state, feelings and family/familiar environment domains. In relation of the comparative between adolescents with and without depressive symptomatology, we found statistically relevant differences in family/familiar environment and provocation/bullying. In the first domain, adolescents with no indication of depressive symptomatology showed higher averages in familiar interaction instead of the ones which demonstrated symptomatology, denoting better quality of family life. In provocation/bullying domain, people without depressive symptomatology had better averages, indicating the higher the social acceptance is, the lower the feeling of fear, rejection and anxiety towards your respective equals will be. Therefore, it is expected this study contributes for a wider comprehension about the relation between depression and QOL constructs in the adolescence's school context.

Keywords : depression; depressive symptomatology; quality of life; adolescent.
