The objective of this research was to understand the narratives about the experience of women's prenatal care at a public hospital in the city of Salvador, and more specifically, to understand the meaning of pregnancy for women and examine the facilitators and complicating the accession of women to prenatal care. This is a qualitative exploratory study. The selection of the women's group membership to prenatal care was conducted among patients from the pre-natal. The women of noncompliance were women interned in a maternity ward in rooming. Participants were three pregnant women in group membership and three postpartum women in the group of non-adherence to prenatal care. Were conducted semi-structured interviews with the participants, signed the Instrument of Consent, in accordance with the Resolution CNS 196/96. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed, and organized into categories: the perception of women about pregnancy, characteristics and understanding of prenatal care, emphasizing the aspects that contributed to and hindered the realization of this care. The results indicated that women, in general, face difficulties in different orders linked to social vulnerability context in which they are, and even then, went to great lengths to ensure skilled care for their health and the prevention of harm to your child. Among participants who did not adhere to prenatal care, some impediments were identified, among which stands out the difficulties regarding the management of care to pregnant women in Salvador that hinder accessibility.
