DIAZ, Zusana Matos; CAIRES, Susana  y  CORREIA, Susana. Needs and concerns of parents of babies admitted in a neonatology unit. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.2, pp.236-252. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/16psd170210.

This paper presents an exploratory study involving parents who had a baby hospitalized in a Neonatology Unit of a Portuguese public hospital. Its aim was to identify the main needs and concerns experienced by a group of 20 parents regarding aspects concerning their child's current condition and future. The parents' experiences were explored by means of a semi-structured interview during the hospital stay. Results reveal that the parents' most common concerns regard their baby's health condition; their future development; and their ability to take autonomous care of their baby after leaving the hospital. In terms of their needs, the most pressing ones regard information (regular and clear) about the evolution of their baby's clinical status and treatments; the need to be close to their child during hospitalization, and to have quality moments/interactions with it; as well as the need for the stabilization of the baby's clinical condition so they can go back home. In terms of clinical practice, the authors emphasize the relevance of studies focused on the early exploration of these parents' needs and concerns, in order to intervene as soon as possible, still during their stay at the Neonatology Unit. By means of this intervention it is possible to prevent potential disturbances in the parent-infant's attachment process and on the baby's developmental path.
