Abstract

Background: Despite the popularity of reminiscence as an intervention strategy to improve mental health and well-being in old age, the literature points to the need for more quality research, to sustain the impact of this therapy in people with cognitive decline. Objective: To evaluate the impact of reminiscence therapy in cognition, behavior, mood and autobiographical memory in institutionalized participants with cognitive decline. Methodology: The effects of individual free reminiscence therapy, with a narrative character and that stimulate recovery of positive events were described in 2 participants with cognitive decline, through the case report methodology, with quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results: The reminiscence therapy led to improvement of the variables under study in the participants, especially in cognition components, humor, observed behaviors and autobiographical memory. Conclusions: Reminiscence demonstrated in the cases reported here, its positive impact, such as a non-pharmacological therapy, in people with cognitive decline by stimulating and enhancing past experiences of the individual.
