The scores of Depression, Anxiety and Stress were computed. The association between consumption of medicine and self-medication according to demographic variables was performed using the chi-square test. To compare the mean scores of Depression, Anxiety and Stress according to variables of interest was performed analysis of variance (ANOVA). The DASS-21 presented adequate validity and reliability (c2/df=2.362-2.740; CFI=0.98-0.99; TLI=0.97-0.99; RMSEA=0.078-0.091; AVE=0.543-0.726; a=0.846-0.922; CR=0.892-0.948). There was a high prevalence of consumption of medicines and self-medication. Individuals aged 51-60 years, with low educational and economic level C consumed more medicine. The practice of self-medication was lower among those aged 51-60 years. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress were higher among those who consumed antidepressants, anxiolytics, analgesics and muscle relaxants more often. It was concluded that the consumption of medicine and practice of self-medication were associated with demographic characteristics and major DASS-21 scores were found among individuals who consumed of medicine recently.
