Abstract

AFONSO, Andreia Castro  and  SILVA, Isabel. Oral health- related quality of life assessed in adults: integrative review. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.2, pp.230-253. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/15psd160209.

Changes in oral health can affect feeding, communication, social interaction, intellectual performance and rest. In assessing subjective experiences related to the impact of oral health conditions - Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) - valuable information can be collected with the intend of improving it. This integrative review aims to gather consistent information about OHRQoL focusing on assessment tools for adults. The electronic databases consulted were PubMed, SciELO and B-ON with the use of the descriptors "oral health-related quality of life", "questionnaires" and "adults". Recommendations proposed in PRISMA guide were adopted. The 19 assessed publications comprise observational studies published between 2005 and 2014, pointing to a diversity of instruments empirically validated, referring generic approach to oral health (OHIP-14, OIDP, GOHAI, OHQOL) and specific approach (PIDAQ).Overall, the instruments showed good sensitivity and construct validity, as distinguished by the diversity of domains and items that focus on the physical, emotional and social functioning. The instruments are brief, easy to understand and of quick administration. Generally, they focus on negative impact of oral health on QoL  and only two instruments (GOHAI, PIDAQ) integrate, simultaneously, the two kinds of impact. Compared to other instruments, the OHIP-14 has more cultural versions, versatility by including more domains and provides access to information on the severity, extent and prevalence of perceived impacts, suggesting it may be the most appropriate in contexts for clinical intervention and intercultural research.

Keywords : oral health; quality of life instruments; assessment; adults.
