Abstract
MATOS, F.; MARTINS, H.; JESUS, S.N. and VISEU, J.. Prevention of violence through the resilience of students. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2015, vol.16, n.1, pp.35-43. ISSN 1645-0086. https://doi.org/10.15309/15psd160105.
Peer violence is an increasingly expression in children’s lives and youth in school. Often, violence takes concealed contours but, on the other hand, it’s an increasingly physical aggressive practice in our schools, as it is reported by the media. Resilience, an important feature of human development, reveals itself as a majorly in overcoming difficult situations and in the positive and healthy adaptation of the person when in contact with adverse situations. The intention of this investigation is to analyze the relationship between resilience and peer violence among students of 2nd and 3rd cycle of schooling. To a sample of students from the 2nd and 3rd cycles (N=1,361), we applied two instruments validated for the Portuguese population: the IAVE (Inventory Assessment School Violence) (Matos, 2012; Matos, et al., 2012) and MSCR (Inventory for Assessing Resilience) (Hiew, 1998, 2000; Martins, 2005; Matos, 2012; Matos, et al., 2013). By a simple linear regression, it’s found that resilience negatively influences peer violence. If to a big level of resilience corresponds less violence, the use of strategies that promote resilience should be a priority in strategies to promote mental health in school.
