Abstract

RAMOS, Luciane; FERREIRA, Eleonora Arnaud Pereira  and  NAJJAR, Enise Cássia Abdo. Effects of self-monitoring on emotional indicators and adherence to diabetes treatment. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.3, pp.567-585. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/14psd150302.

The present study compared the effects of three procedures one motional indicators (stress, anxiety and depression), quality of life and adherence to treatment in nine adults with Type2 diabetes. The participants were distributed into three conditions: Self-monitoring, Recall and Routine. All participants were evaluated at the beginning and at the end of the study, regarding the emotional indicators, through the Lipp Stress Symptoms Inventory (LSSI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI); participants’ quality of life was evaluated through the SF-36; and adherence to treatment was evaluated through glycated hemoglobin and self-reports. In the Self-monitoring Condition there was a decrease in the glycated hemoglobin levels of all participants and an improvement in the emotional indicators of two participants. In the Recall Condition there was a decrease in the glycated hemoglobin levels of one participant and an improvement on the quality of life perception in all participants. There was an aggravation in the emotional indicators of all three participants in the Routine Condition. There were no changes in adherence to diet and physical activity (except for participantB2), regardless of the condition to which the participant was submitted. These data suggest that the Self-monitoring procedure favored changes in emotional indicators, but had no effect on adherence to diet and regular physical activity.

Keywords : psychological aspects; diabetes; quality of life; adherence to treatment.
