Abstract

LOPES, Fernanda; CUNHA, Sílvia Mendes da; ZIBETTI, Murilo  and  BIZARRO, Lisiane. Pattern of consumption and expectations in relation to smoking among college students. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.2, pp.439-453. ISSN 1645-0086.

Factors such as low education level and low income are traditionally associated with smoking. However, college students smoke more than general population. This study aimed to understand the pattern of cigarette smoking among college students, as well as psychological and behavioral aspects related to consumption. Data from 95 college smokers from Porto Alegre showed that 83% of participants showed a tendency to abuse level and 15% a tendency to dependence level in ASSIST questionnaire. In FTND, 81% showed mild, 4% moderate and 14% high level of nicotine dependence. Expectations as stress relief (87%), sociability increase (63%) and alertness (41%) were identified as positive beliefs related to smoking, although they were concerned about tobacco-related diseases risks. Such expectations show a gap related to an important information about healthy behaviors in long term, as well as specific strategies in smoking cessation programs for college students.

Keywords : smoking; health; college students; behavior; expectations.
