Resumen

ESTRELA-DIAS, Maria  y  PAIS-RIBEIRO, José. Positive psychological group intervention: strengths and virtues in rehabilitation after stroke. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp.201-218. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/14psd150117.

The objectives of this research work were: to develop a positive psychological intervention group (PPIG) thus promoting human strengths and virtues in terms of functionality in basic activities of daily living (BADL) and post - stroke mental health (MH); to understand and identify the human strengths and virtues in post-stroke rehabilitation, from the intervention strategies that induce positive emotions and the discussion of issues in group; to compare the functionality in BADL and post - stroke MH, with and without a PPIG. The sample was collected in the Medium-term Continuing Care Unit Vila do Conde. The 18 participants were between 45 and 85 years old and were distributed by the intervention group (IG) and the comparison group (CG). The assessment protocols were: the Sociodemographic and Clinical Questionnaire, the Barthel Index (Collin & Wade, 1988, adapted for the Portuguese population by Araújo, Ribeiro, Oliveira & Pinto, 2007) and the Mental Health Inventory - 5 (McHorney & Ware, 1995, a 5 item reduced version, adapted to the Portuguese population by Ribeiro, 2001). The results obtained show that the IG shared fears and developed strengths, changed their interpretation of the post-stroke rehabilitation condition into a challenge they needed to overcome, became more interested in working in physical therapy and assessed the PPIG as a time of learning and good disposition. The IG benefited from the IPPG in terms of functionality in BADL and MH, compared to GC. This study is guiding future research concerning the impact of human virtues during rehabilitation after stroke.

Palabras clave : stroke; functionality; mental health; human strengths and virtues; strategies inducing positive emotions.
