Abstract

FIGUEIREDO, Priscila Checoli  and  MOTTA, Ivonise Fernandes da. Rescuing parents' position: a proposal for mental health promotion. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.1, pp.47-59. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/14psd150106.

The Basic Health Unit (UBS, acronym in Portuguese) is a SUS’s (Unified Healthcare System) facility where services related to Basic Attention, which comprises health promotion and disease prevention as well as low-complexity technological procedures, are performed. The UBS receives, on a daily basis, parents who seek help to alleviate sadness concerning themselves or their children. Frequently, the Psychologist is requested to help to understand the case and to intervene in situations in which the parents regard themselves as unable to help. Psychology should play a role in this social demand, taking care to respect the prerogatives that SUS has in healthcare and acting, within Basic Attention, aiming for Health Promotion. According to Winnicott, child’s environment, hence the family, has a fundamental role in the healthy development of the individual. Winnicott also demonstrates that it is possible, by the means of therapeutic consultation, to help the child to resume a healthy development, given that there exists a family that can offer the “environmental provision” necessary to that development. Therefore, support and care for parents, which aims to deliver the conditions that will make possible the resumption of the healthy development of the child, is a reasonable strategy in Health Promotion. This study presents, through the analysis of a case that occurred in a UBS, the usage of the first interviews as therapeutic consultations with the mother and illustrates its effectiveness in helping the family.
