Abstract

GRACA, Maria et al. Relationship between perceived risk and load handling dependent elderly. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.1, pp.53-63. ISSN 1645-0086.

The high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries related to work in health professionals, especially the transference and mobilization of dependent individuals, has been debated. The aim of this research has focused on the relation between the perception of burden handling frail elderly (evaluated by the perception of effort, over time for the procedure and pain during the procedure) and assessing the risk of handling with the Instrument for patient Handling Assessment, developed in Brazilian Portuguese by Radovanovic and Alexandre (2004) and adapted to European Portuguese (Graça & Martín, 2011). The perception of excessive time spent on procedures is related to a higher level of risk in the management of patients, and seems to determine the perception of burden handling in professional nursing. The application of risk handling assessment scale guides the procedural adequacy of resources, reducing the burden.

Keywords : Handling elderly patients; Perception of risk; health carers.
