Abstract

ROQUE, Liliana  and  SOARES, Luísa. Burnout in a portuguese sample of psychologists from autonomous region of Madeira. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.1, pp.2-14. ISSN 1645-0086.

This study aims at studying the burnout levels in a sample of Portuguese psychologists. It also intended to explore a connection between the "burnout" syndrome and the type of most frequent problematic dealt by the psychologist and the specific sociodemographic variables. It also tried to gather some suggestions given by these psychologists as to avoid "burnout". Fifty two psychologists, who work in health institutions, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira took part in this study. We concluded that the "burnout" prevalence in these subjects is low, taking into consideration the Maslach Burnout Inventory (Maslach, & Jackson, 1986; Cruz, & Melo, 1996; Gomes, 1998). We did not find significant connections between burnout and variables being studied, with the exception of the connection between the emotional exhaustion and relational problems. We also verified that many of suggestions given by the psychologists match with the preventions strategies of burnout referred by some authors, namely involvement in activities outside work that promote well-being, establish prioritization, flexible hours/reward for the effort made, good emotional support outside work as well as the creation of group supervision.
