Abstract

GIACOMOZZI, Andréia Isabel  and  BOUSFIELD, Andréa Bárbara da Silva. The social representation of the body for participantes at virtual communities pro-anorexia in relationships networks (orkut). Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2011, vol.12, n.2, pp.255-266. ISSN 1645-0086.

This survey investigated the social representation of the body for young women taking part in virtual communities pro-anorexia in relationships networks (orkut). 136 women with ages ranging from 13 to 26 years participated in the study, of which 76% declared using the Low Food technique (low consumption of daily calories) and 67% the No Food technique (no ingestion of solid food). As a data collection tool, an online questionnaire was posted in the pro-anorexia communities at the orkut. Answers were analyzed aided by SPAD software. Data indicate that the body is represented as a business card, always reflecting beauty in order to help achieving power in life. Sacrifices and suffering are part in the search for the perfect body, as shown by this sample of women, including diets that risk health and can lead to tragic consequences in life.
