Abstract

ANTONIO, Patrícia. Psychologyand chronic illness: group intervention in diabetes Mellitus. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2010, vol.11, n.1, pp.15-27. ISSN 1645-0086.

This paper outlines the role of multidisciplinary group interventions in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, focusing on type-2 diabetes in primary health care treatment programs. Health psychology has an important role in understanding the psychological consequences of diabetes, and the psychological factors related to self-care disease circumstances. The increasing recognition of the importance of working in multidisciplinary teams when educating diabetic patients has contributed to the development of several psychological intervention projects (group or individual), as well as a number of educational programs, in primary and secondary health care settings. Group interventions have shown to provide benefits associated with physical and mental health, personal development and growth of relational skills, as well as treatment adherence and response to a higher number of cases.

Keywords : Diabetes mellitus; Multidisciplinary group intervention; Primary health care.
