Abstract

MURCHO, Nuno Álvaro C.; JESUS, Saul Neves de  and  PACHECO, José Eusébio Palma. The relationship between depression in occupational context and burnout: an empirical study among nurses. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2009, vol.10, n.1, pp.57-68. ISSN 1645-0086.

With this study we want to investigate the relationship between depression and burnout syndrome, in its three dimensions emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal realization. This research was conducted with a convenience sample of 499 nurses who work in the Algarve larger Hospitals, and the instruments used were the depression subscale of EADS 21 of Lovibond and Lovibond (1995, in the Portuguese adaptation by Pais Ribeiro, Honrado, & Leal, 2004), and MBI of Maslach and Jackson (1981, in the Portuguese adaptation for nurses by Parreira & Sousa, 2000). This result, lead us to suggest that although the depression disorder in the workplace can occur as a manifestation of burnout, however, the reverse seems to be not clear. So, we cannot say that burnout is a manifestation of depression. We conclude that these two entities are different constructs, although they may have common features.
