AMORIM, Isabel Lajoso  e  COELHO, Rui. Type II diabetes mellitus and psycopathological symptoms. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.2, pp.319-333. ISSN 1645-0086.

The objective was to evaluate the presence of anxious and depressive symptomatology in type 2 diabetics to determine which variables differentiate those that present psychopathological symptoms and those that do not. It was observed that depressive and anxious symptomatology prevailed. In relation to anxiety, a function able to discriminate between groups with or without symptoms was obtained, based on four variables which justify the 16.7% variation. It was found that a higher dependency on escape-avoidance coping was characteristic of individuals who presented symptoms and greater Instrumental support, belonging to the male gender and holding a professional activity, were characteristics of individuals without symptoms. In the depressive cases, four variables were identified that differentiated groups, with a function that explained the 25.3% variation: individuals with depressive symptomatology were characterised by a greater dependency on escape-avoidance strategies and higher BMI. Greater Emotional and Instrumental support characterised individuals who did not present symptoms. Psychosocial aspects are considered to be extremely important when providing healthcare to diabetic patients.
