Abstract

FERREIRA, António José Santos; NUNES, Ana Isabel Marques; RODRIGUES, Elisabete Fátima Pessoa  and  CAMARNEIRO, Ana Paula Forte. Quality of life patients undergoing a valvular cardiac surgery. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.1, pp.155-164. ISSN 1645-0086.

The aim of this study is to describe and to compare the quality of life of patients with valvular cardiac pathology in two independent groups: 1 - Patients before the surgical intervention; 2 -Patients after the surgery. Two independent samples in a total of 71 patients were constituted. The instruments for data collection used were a questionnaire of sociodemographic and clinical characterization of the sample and a scale of evaluation for the quality of life (SF-36). The results suggest that the patients with valvular cardiac pathology present a better quality of life between the third and the sixth month after the surgery than those who are waiting for the surgical intervention. The differences between the averages are statistically significant for all the dimensions measured by the SF-36, except in the dimensions physical performance and social function. These results indicate that the surgery is efficient in the improvement of the quality of life of the patients with valvular cardiac pathology.
