Abstract

SILVA, Isabel L.; PAIS-RIBEIRO, J.L.  and  CARDOSO, Helena. Contribute to the adaptation of an obesity specific quality of life scale (ORWELL-97) to the portuguese population. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.1, pp.29-48. ISSN 1645-0086.

The objective of the present study was to contribute to the adaptation of an obesity specific quality of life scale (ORWELL97) to the Portuguese population. The translation of ORWELL 97 into Portuguese was done, initially, in an independent way by three translators, who, subsequently, proceeded to a consensual final Portuguese version. A convenience sample of 198 obese patients, 84.8% females, aged between 15 and 65 years old (M=38.86; SD=11.47), with a school level ranged between zero and 22 years (M=7.34; SD=4.34), presenting a body mass index between 30.37 e 80.65 (M=48.76; SD=8.40) answered to the Portuguese version of ORWELL 97. Results suggested that this scale present a satisfactory reliability, validity and sensitivity. Furthermore it is a brief answer scale, easily understood and well accepted by the respondents.

Keywords : Obesity; Quality of life; Assessment; ORWELL-97.
