CASTELO, Rita A.V. Bicha; RIBEIRO, J. Pais  y  CASTELO, H. Bicha. Quality of life in patients submitted to cholecystectomy because acute cholecystitis: laparoscopic surgery versus classic surgery. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2008, vol.9, n.1, pp.5-14. ISSN 1645-0086.

Quality of life (QoL) of patients submitted to cholecystectomy is a recent issue. Surgery can be done with two different traditions, classic and laparoscopic with the last one with less discomfort for patient. The aim of the present study is to compare QoL of persons submitted to classic surgery with the ones submitted to laparoscopic surgery. Participants are 120 patients submitted to surgery at less than tree years, divided by two equivalent groups, aged between 22 and 74 years, 78.3% female, and equivalents for demographic characteristics. For QoL assessment we use SF-36 questionnaire with 36 items distributed for eight dimensions, physical function, role-physical, social functioning, bodily pain, general health perceptions, mental health, role-emotional, vitality. The laparoscopic surgery group exhibits statistically significant higher mean QoL scores for the dimensions bodily pain (93,33 vs 56,68), role-emotional (76,11 vs 36,66), role-physical (61,66 vs 35,41), social functioning (86,66 vs 67,08), mental health (76,60 vs 65,56), and vitality (69,08 vs 49,00), in comparison with classic surgery. Male patients exhibits statistically significant higher mean QoL scores for the dimensions, roleemotional (75,0 vs 51,7), mental health (81,3 vs 68,8), and vitality (71,0 vs 56,1), in comparison with female patients. In conclusion we can say that laparoscopic surgery facilitates earlier return to normal life and better functionality when compared with classic surgery in acute cholecystitis patients.
