BARREIRA, Esmeralda; GOMES, Francisco Sampaio  and  CUNHA, Luís Miguel. Attitudes towards smoking: Smoking habits and the role of health professionals. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2007, vol.8, n.2, pp.197-207. ISSN 1645-0086.

In the present work, we studied the attitudes of ambulatory patients, last year nursing and medical students and health professionals (physicians and nurses) relative to smoking habits and the role of health professionals. A adapted questionnaire was applied to 360 individuals (120 students, 120 health professionals and 120 patients), in health care units in the Porto and Braga districts. The results revealed a high number of smokers (19%), representing 15% of the women and 27% of men. Health professionals and smokers were found to value best the medical exemplarity than patients, students and non-smokers. Smokers showed more permissive attitudes relative to smoking than non-smokers.
