Abstract

MARCELINO, Dália  and  FIGUEIRAS, Maria João. The posttraumatic stress disorder in emergency ambulance personnel: the influence of the sense of coherence and the personality. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2007, vol.8, n.1, pp.95-108. ISSN 1645-0086.

The aims of this study were to (1) investigate the levels of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in emergency ambulance personnel (2) to analyse the pattern of intercorrelation between socio-demographic variables, PTSD, sense of coherence, and personality, and (3) to investigate possible gender differences between the above variables. Fifty six participants completed a self-administered questionnaire, mean age ranging from 18 to 55 years old. The results indicated that 64% of the sample shoe symptoms of PTSD, and those also show lower sense of coherence, extroversion, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness. There are gender differences on perception and interpretation of traumatic experiences, in which men show higher sense of coherence. These results are congruent with previous studies on this area.
