Abstract

MARQUES, António José; QUEIROS, Cristina  and  ROCHA, Nuno Barbosa da. Developmental cognitive rehabilitation methods with long term unemployed persons integrated in a personal development program . Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.1, pp.109-116. ISSN 1645-0086.

Schizophrenia is a psychopathological condition associated with cognitive dysfunctions, manifested in different neuropsychological dimensions (e.g., attention, mnesic functions, executive functions, processing speed). There is empirical evidence supporting the existence of a causality relation between the cognitive functioning and the functional skills of individuals. This paper purposes (1) to describe the cognitive rehabilitation procedures using virtual reality; (2) to characterize a cognitive and social skills development program (group intervention), based in Brenner’s Integrated Psychological Therapy; and (3) to report the initial impacts of these methodologies application in schizophrenic and long term unemployed persons integrated in a personal development program. This kind of Competencies Development Programs aim to promote people’s global functioning and their quality of life, which depend, in great measure, on the individuals learning and generalization capabilities, and consequently, on their cognitive skills.

Keywords : Cognitive rehabilitation; Integrated psychological therapy; Schizophrenia; Virtual reality.
