Abstract

In this paper the authors describe the proceeding used in order to provide psychological support to mothers of newborns in a neonatology service. The emotional support was given mainly in the group context and in some cases in individual context. The theoretical orientation included the systemic theory and crisis intervention. In the group approach steps included: the promotion of group communication and confidence, the expression of sentiments, beliefs, fears and psychological, family and social difficulties. Objective consists in encouraging and developing the group emotional support taking advantage of Similarities between mother's life experiences and fears in the situation. In the individual approach it was used de psychological counseling and crisis intervention models. Objectives were: developing and maintaining rapport, identifying the precipitating problems, identifying coping strategies and promoting new strategies. Evaluation was made thorough mother's opinions got some months after, which stressed the importance of this kind of intervention in such a group of mothers in the neonatology service.
