HELENO, Maria Geralda Viana  and  ANTONIA, Catarina. Promotion and Education for the Health: a Study with Diabetic Patients. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2004, vol.5, n.2, pp.189-194. ISSN 1645-0086.

The psychological section of the General Hospital of Guainazes showed high number of patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. This study had the following objectives: study the adaptative effectiveness of these patients; create an admission program to prevent the chronic complications and evaluate the efficiency of the program by the quality of glicemy control and the number of admission. The patients were interviewed using Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Scale - EDAO (Simon, 1989) and then in groups and, when necessary saw for other specialties. Groups sections of reflections of two hours each one were formed every fifteen days. For the analysis of the blood glucose control it was considered that the patients with average blood glucose under that 200 mg/dl were considered of good control and, above that of bad control. From the group of good control, 80% kept or improved. From the group of bad control, 70% improved. From each group, only 10% of the patients worsened the quality of the glicemy control. None of the patients went to the hospital mean while. Despite the difficulties related to the adhesion to the patients and the General Hospital of Guainazes institution we conclude that this kind of work can help people with diabetes mellitus type 2, improving their quality of life and their life expectancy.
